Development of Chlorella pyrenoidosa EMS mutants with enhanced biomass and lipid content for biofuel production

Biodiesel production from microalgae depends on algal biomass through autotrophic cultivation, and it has a lot of potential as feasible alternative source energy. The lethal mutagenic effects ethyl methanesulphonate (EMS) are investigated in the present study organism Chlorella pyrenoidosa for generation paler mutants. C. wild-type strain was treated with 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 M EMS doses colonies that appeared after 20 days growth solid TAP medium were analyzed, total two mutant less pigmentation identified. CPM1 (10.02 ± 0.03 3.12 0.04 µg/ml) CPM2 (9.55 0.0 32.84 mutants had lower chlorophyll b carotenoids content than wild type. Mutants produced significant (1.34- 1.31-fold enhanced CPM2) lipid These findings suggest genetic modification to produce strains increased productivity biofuel production.
